My Approach to Therapy

I take an empathic, collaborative approach to treatment, viewing you as the expert on yourself and your situation, and myself as your consultant.   I work in a creative, integrative manner, weaving empirically supported intervention techniques from a variety of psychotherapeutic orientations (e.g. emotion-focused, somatic, psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, EMDR) into a fundamentally interpersonal approach in order to best address your or your child's specific needs.

My clinical thinking is grounded in the science of interpersonal neurobiology and emphasizes the way in which relationships--past and present--influence how we feel, think and behave towards ourselves and others.  I attend quite a bit to emotions and their physiological correlates--in other words, how you're responding emotionally and physically at any given moment during a session--as emotional reactions, particularly those outside awareness, often underlie self limiting patterns of thought and behavior.

I hold the perspective that maintaining key relationships is the primary human motivation, and that many dysfunctional beliefs and behaviors are derived of attempts to preserve essential attachments.  Though our focus will be primarily on current experiences, we will explore past events in order to appreciate and address the influence they may continue to exert in the present.  Additionally, assisting you or your child to recognize and further cultivate existing areas of strength will be a fundamental component of our work together.
